Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels for energy is thought to be a major contributor to global warming. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas which traps heat in the earth's atmosphere, causing incremental rises in temperature, with potentially catastrophic effects on weather systems.
In the EU, buildings account for around 40% of final energy consumption, but by improving their energy efficiency, carbon emissions from buildings could be substantially reduced and cost effective energy savings of around 22% realized by 2010.
