CAMPBELL SWITCH ON TO ENERGY SAVING

EPCNI Art Competition focuses on energy waste.

Campbell College, Belfast is a stunning, red brick building full of character and history but like most listed buildings with high ceilings and single glazed windows it has its fair share of draughts and was not originally designed to be energy efficient. Later additions and extensions including the recently opened Junior School, do not suffer from the same problems having been built to the latest Building Control regulations - although wasted energy was still a problem.

With soaring energy costs and a responsibility to educate the boys in the importance of saving energy, the school recently embarked on an awareness campaign through an Art Competition sponsored by EPCNI.

The competition highlighted the importance of saving energy, its effect on global warming and the ways in which energy waste could be reduced.

The competition was enthusiastically supported by the boys who were also shown ways in which energy savings could be made at the school and at home. Simon Moody from Campbell College remarked "We were delighted with the way the boys embraced the challenge of the Art Competition and the effect it has had on the school. Lights are turned out in empty rooms, doors to rooms not in use are closed, computers and monitors are turned off and not left on standby and the effects can already be seen in a reduction in our energy costs" Moody continued "Teachers are also playing their part and the atmosphere around school is definitely that we are making a contribution by reducing our energy consumption"

Michael Rodgers, Managing Director of EPCNI commented "We are delighted to have sponsored the Art Competition at Campbell College and to have helped the boys and teachers focus on ways in which the school could be more energy efficient. The standard of the artwork was very high and clearly demonstrated how interested the boys were in the subject. We hope the school can continue with its campaign and that the boys will bring home the knowledge they have learned to make savings there also"
